Easy Layered Paper Rosettes Using Dies You Already Own

There’s something about a beautifully layered paper rosette that instantly adds charm to a handmade project. Whether you’re decorating a mini album, Traveler’s Notebook, greeting card, scrapbook layout, journal page, or gift tag, dimensional embellishments have a wonderful way of drawing the eye and giving your projects that extra special handmade touch.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably tried making traditional folded paper rosettes more than once. I own several rosette dies and I also know how to make them completely by hand using score lines and careful folding. The problem wasn’t creating the folds—it was what happened afterward!

More often than not, the moment I reached for my hot glue, my perfectly folded rosette seemed to develop a mind of its own. Instead of staying nice and round, it would become lopsided, stretched, or just plain wonky.

After plenty of experimenting, I discovered another approach that completely changed the way I make rosettes.

Instead of folding paper into shape, I began building my embellishments one layer at a time using dies I already owned. Not only did this solve my “wonky rosette” problem, but it also opened the door to endless design possibilities.

Why I Love This Method

One of the biggest advantages of this technique is that it encourages you to shop your own craft room before buying anything new. Take a look through your die collection and you’ll probably discover dozens of pieces that can be layered together beautifully. Basic stitched circles, decorative frames, snowflake dies, floral shapes, lace-inspired designs, and even intricate mandalas can all become part of your own unique embellishments.

Because every layer is built individually, you have complete control over the finished look. You decide how much dimension to add, which textures to combine, and how elaborate or simple you’d like your rosettes to be.

Even better… It’s a wonderful way to use up those beautiful scraps you’ve been saving from your favorite scrapbook paper collections.

My Favorite Designer Tips

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that beautiful embellishments aren’t created by using more supplies—they’re created by making thoughtful design choices.

Mix Simple and Intricate Dies

One of my favorite tricks is combining elegant decorative dies with simple circle frames. The contrast between detailed and clean shapes creates beautiful layers while allowing each piece to stand out.

Use Fun Foam Instead of Foam Squares

Whenever I’m creating dimensional embellishments, I almost always reach for fun foam.

Not only is it budget friendly, but it allows me to customize exactly how much depth I want between each layer. A single sheet goes a long way and gives me much more flexibility than pre-cut foam dots.

Let Your Focal Point Shine

Not every layer needs to be raised. As I build my embellishments, I’ll often glue the last one or two layers down flat before adding my focal embellishment. This keeps the finished piece balanced and prevents the project from becoming overly bulky.

Sometimes less dimension actually creates a prettier finished result because your eye naturally knows where to look first.

Mix Your Favorite Papers

Don’t be afraid to combine designer papers with glitter cardstock, watercolor paper, mirror cardstock, vellum, or specialty cardstock.

Mixing textures adds richness and gives every embellishment its own personality.
